Mungyeong, promoted to the urban and rural compound city in 1995, is medium mountain area located at the southeast of Korea and the northwest land of North Gyeongsang Province in its local section. It shares a border with Yecheon to the east, Sangju to the south, Goesan of North Chungcheong Province to the west, and Jecheon, Chungju and Danyang of North Chungcheong Province to the north. Mungyeong is located within a radius of 197 km of the south of Seoul, so anywhere in Korea is reachable within 3 hours from the city. It covers 911.7 square kilometer with 2 towns, 7 subcounties, and 5 dongs, which consists of 4.8% of total territory of the North Gyeongsang Province. As of December, 2007, its population is 75,223 with 30,140 households.
As it is located at the northwest of Yeoungnam region and surrounded with mountains in an arc, it has a basin type mountain climate. The temperature has been average with 11.4¡É. The temperature only fluctuates slightly annually. The average annual rainfall of Mungyeong City for the period of between 2001 and 2005 year has been 1,445.02§®, so it is a pluvial region. The greatest rainfall was 1,962.6§® in 2003 and the least rainfall was 826.6§® in 2001.
In the past, Mungyeong was a central road for scholars in Yeoungnam to go to Hanyang (Seoul) so as to fulfill their great dreams. Presently, it is also the key point that National Road No.3 and No.34 intersect and Jungbu Inland Expressway as well as Gyeongbuk Railway runs through.
In December, 2007, the number of companies registered in Mungyeong was 5,450 and the employees numbered 17,022. In terms of business type, wholesale and retail are dominating. In 2006 alone, Mungyeong¡¯s trade volume reached US$37 Million with US$29Million in export, and US$8 Million in import.
Mungyeong is spotlighted as the best tourist spot with an attractive tourist belt of various sightseeing resources such as Mungyeong Saejae, Coal Museum, a Shooting gallery, gliding land, and Mungyeong Total Hot Springs of 'Calcium bicarbonate hot spring' and 'alkali hot spring' that are the only yellowish brown healthy hot springs in Korea. Among them, Mungyeong features the ¡°Mungyeong Saejae¡±, which is a path for birds. High enough for birds to flock, it has three main gates each with a wealth of sites worth seeing. |
