| Bonghwa, located at the northernmost tip of North Gyeongsang Province, is a place of manners with a scholarly spirit and beautiful mountains. As of December, 2005, the population is 36,738 with 15,067 households. |

Bonghwa meets Uljin and Yeongyang to the east, Yeongju to the west, Andong to the south, and Yeongwol, Taebaek and Samcheok of Gangwon Province to the north. The length is 43km from East to West and 40km from South to the north. It consists of 1 town and 9 subcounties
Since 85% of the area is an uncontaminated natural mountain forest, the natural view is spectacular and there are many special products. The famous mountains including Cheongryang Mountain, which has been specially appointed as a provincial park, and other national treasures are scattered around the county. The northern borderline is the basement that Sobaek Mountain Range separated from Taebaek Mountain Range. There are lines of high peaks such as Mt. Taebaek (1,567m), Mt. Guwun (1,346m), Mt. Geum (1,235m), and Mt. Seondal (1,236m). It is the first mountain group in North Gyeongsang Province with lots of high peaks of higher than 1,000m even in the county centering on the north and east. There is little level land beside Naeseong Stream, the upper stream of Nakdong River that collects several streams, flowing south-west at the center.
As being located at mountainous area in land, the temperature is low compared to the latitude and temperature gap is big. In this mountainous area, there are some places that cannot raise two crops a year because of lacking daylight and low temperature. The average temperature of January is 4.6¡É below zero, and the average temperature of August is 22.8¡É. The compound annual temperature is 9.4¡É, and the annual precipitation is 1174.12mm.
In December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Bonghwa was 2,471 and the employees numbered 8,227. In terms of business type, wholesale and retail has been dominated. In 2006 alone, Bonghwa¡¯s trade volume reached US$937 Million with US$321Million in export, and US$626Million in import.
Bonghwa is centered on Mt. Cheongnyangsan National Park, and is blessed with many natural treasures. The central attractions in Mt. Cheongnyangsan are the thirty-six mountain peaks that pierce the scenery. Pine mushrooms are the special local product and a Pine Mushroom Festival is held September every year, where people can enjoy the taste and fragrance of pine mushroom by collecting and observing it, the jewel of forest. |
